Department of Materials Engineering was founded in 1977 to train highly trained engineers for the metallurgical industries, particularly the ones in the province which is a premier in this field in Iran. The department has 27 academic members and offers two separate undergraduate programs; Extractive Metallurgy and Industrial Metallurgy. Graduate programs are also offered in Materials Characterization and Selection and Corrosion leading to M.Sc. degree. The department offers Ph.D program in Biomaterials, Nanomaterials, and Materials Science. The undergraduate students in the department follow and essential program of "core" subjects in the form of lectures and laboratory exercises on the relationship between structures and properties of materials, techniques available for characterization and testing, extractive and refining metallurgy, foundry technology, refractories, metal shaping processes, quality control operations, materials selection, corrosion, and surface treatments. Elective courses can be chosen from an extensive range to suit particular interests and abilities. The department is equipped with essential laboratories such as Mechanical Metallurgy, Extractive Metallurgy, Solidification and Casting, Molding Materials, Metallography and Electron Microscopy, Heat Treatment, Corrosion, Ceramics, Refractories, and Analytical Chemistry.
