This Department was founded in 1977 to train speciallized manpower for the metallurgical industries, particularly the ones in the province which is a premier in this field in Iran. The department has 27 academic members and offers two separate undergraduate programs; one in Extractive Metallurgy, the other in Industrial metallurgy. Graduate programs are also offered in Materials selection and corrosion leading to M.Sc. degree. The department offers Ph. D program as well. The undergraduate students in the Department follow and essential program of "core" subjects in the form of lectures and laboratory exercises on the relationship between structures and properties of metals, techniques available for examination and testing, extractive and refining metallurgy, foundry technology. refractories, metal shaping processes, quality control operations, materials selection, corrosion, and surface treatments. Elective courses can be chosen from an extensive range to suit particular interests and abilities. The Department is equipped with essential laboratories such as Mechanical Metallurgy, Extractive Metallurgy, Solidification and Casting, Molding Materials, Metallography and Electron Microscopy, Heat Treatment, Corrosion, Ceramics, Refractories and Analytical Chemistry. Apart from the research projects carried out by the members the fifty full-time graduate students at the Department also work on their own research projects.
